Megaphoning The Message

A pet peeve of mine is when people utilize a data point or a quote from a tweet or article or blog as a weapon to get what they want in an unintended or inappropriate way.

We have to remember that anything that we learn in the media should be verified by going back to the source and understanding the why and the context in which it applies. Most insights are nuanced and situational, not simple and universal.

It is important to simplify concepts to be seen and noticed, but there is a price. In many cases with simplification the intended meaning and purpose is lost. I call that megaphoning the message. The misuse of misunderstood information is one of the biggest drivers of large mistakes I have seen. There is almost nothing worse than being very sure AND very incorrect.

I think it’s important especially in these times to verify information and learn from the source when you can before making a move.
